We chatted to sassy singer-songwriter Laura Steel about her new electro-pop single ‘Feedback’, fashion, Pride, clubbing and how the sky's the limit when it comes to success.

We hear you’ve been up to quite a bit since we last spoke to you – what’s the last year been like?
Wow, where do I start?! In a nutshell, it's been mental! We - I say we because my whole team is like one big family and every success is ours together - have been working really hard behind the scenes getting ready for this year.

It's been very hard as we are doing this all independently. It's incredibly hard work when you don't have a huge record label's budget behind you but we are so proud and happy for all we have achieved so far.

Last year, I played to over 250,000 people across the UK, Ireland and the US. It was awesome! I have come up so much as a performer, singer and songwriter. It's hard to think that two years ago I didn't even sing! I have become a bit of a perfectionist now and I know I won't stop now 'til we make it.

So yes, we have been gearing up to release the first single 'Feedback'. It's set to do really well this summer, the club remix is currently at number five in the official commercial pop club charts and the music video had 15,000 hits on YouTube after being uploaded for just four days! The support we are getting has been incredible. It makes me very honoured to have such a great team and fabulous family and friends - cheese ball, I know! [Winks].

So tell us a bit about the new single ‘Feedback’ – what can we expect?
It's very uplifting and fun. It's about not really giving a monkeys what people say and just being yourself. A lot of people read the lyrics as if it applies to a relationship, but I actually wrote it as if I was trying to help someone get over something bad that has happened to them. I wanted the track to lift people's spirits.

What are you most proud of about the single?
I am proud of my roots, so I guess I love the fact my Northern accent comes through in the song.

Do you remember the first song you ever wrote?
Yes, it was called 'Running' - we had great success across the clubs, even getting no. four in the Euro Dance Chart. I have come a long way from there but I still love the song. It means a lot to me and reminds me of where I was then.

"It's hard to think that two years ago I didn't even sing! I have become a bit of a perfectionist now and I know I won't stop 'til we make it."

Pride season is here – what does Pride mean to you?
Pride to me is about people getting together and celebrating life and freedom of speech no matter what their sexual preferences, beliefs or tendencies.

When and where was the last gay bar/club you went to?
I actually haven't been out for a long time but I was at Horse Meat Disco a few months ago and before that I popped in to see my friend Sandra D who runs a wicked night called Ruby Tuesdays at Ku Club on a Tuesday. There's always a great vibe there and I hear they were paying my single there last week which makes me smile.

Can you remember your very first date? Where did you go and have you kept in contact?!
Oh, that's a tough one. My first ever proper date I guess was when I was about 15! Don't really remember the details. But I'm not with the person now so can't have gone that well, eh?!

We love your style – what’s your favourite item of clothing?
I don't have a fave item of clothing as I'm more of an accessories kinda gal! I love hats and jewellery and at the moment I love love love my new Puma boots, designed by Hussain Chalayan. They are wedge boots and they are so comfy!

What makes you happy?
Being with the ones I love and seeing them happy.

"It's about not really giving a monkeys what people say and just being yourself...I wanted the track to lift people's spirits."

What makes you angry?
Money, it's the root of all evil.

If we were to buy you a drink at the bar, what would you ask for?
At the moment it would have to be a coke and blackcurrent as I'm not drinking, but normally I might go for a Porn Star or a Mojito! They are fit!

What are your plans for the single and beyond?
Well, depending on how the single goes we are hoping to look to get a publishing deal to finish the album and then the sky is the limit, isn't it?! Fingers crossed!

Anything to add?
Thanks so much for the support GaydarNation! Check out my video and get in touch if you like what you hear.
